Cataract is a condition in which the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to vision impairment. The lens is responsible for focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye, allowing us to see clearly. As cataracts develop, the lens becomes increasingly opaque, which causes light to scatter and reduces the clarity of vision. Symptoms may include blurry vision, decreased color perception, sensitivity to glare, and difficulty seeing at night. Cataracts can develop gradually over time and are more common in older adults, but they can also occur as a result of injury, exposure to radiation, or certain medications. Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial one.
