Pterygium is a common eye condition in which a fleshy, triangular growth develops on the conjunctiva, which is the thin, clear tissue that covers the white part of the eye. The growth can extend onto the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, and cause vision problems. Pterygium is often caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight, wind, and dust, which can lead to chronic irritation and inflammation of the eye. Other risk factors include living in a dry, dusty climate, smoking, and having a weakened immune system. Symptoms may include redness, itching, burning, blurred vision, and a feeling of a foreign body in the eye. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the condition, but may include lubricating eye drops, anti-inflammatory medications, and in more severe cases, surgery to remove the growth.
