Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition that affects older adults, typically those over the age of 50. It is characterized by damage to the macula, a small but critical area in the center of the retina responsible for clear, sharp vision. This damage can cause a range of vision problems, from mild blurriness to severe vision loss. AMD is generally classified into two types: dry AMD, which progresses slowly and involves the buildup of small yellow deposits on the macula, and wet AMD, which progresses more rapidly and involves the growth of abnormal blood vessels beneath the macula. While there is no cure for AMD, various treatment options exist that can help slow the progression of the disease and preserve vision.
