Corneal infections, also known as keratitis, are a type of eye infection that affects the cornea, which is the clear outer layer of the eye. These infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites and can range from mild to severe. Symptoms may include eye redness, pain, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, and discharge from the eye. Risk factors for corneal infections include contact lens use, a weakened immune system, and exposure to contaminated water or soil. Treatment for corneal infections typically involves antibiotics, antiviral or antifungal medications, and sometimes, surgical intervention. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent complications such as scarring, vision loss, and even blindness.
